Percy Jackson Monsters

Monsters

Monsters (or mythics as they prefer to be called) are creatures that appear in the different mythologies. Most are malevolent towards Demigods in general though there have been instances where some are neutral or even benevolent in nature.

Origin

Monsters are considered offshoots of gods (as many of them are descended from or related to them) or cursed beings that terrorize, fight, and often kill demigods and heroes. They are “archetypes,” born from the chaos and barbarism that always exists beneath Western Civilization. This means that they are purely abstract entities.

Death

Monsters will merely reform in Tartarus and come back whenever their physical forms are destroyed. This proves to be an ordeal for heroes, for after a monster is killed it can reappear and attack again, in any time period between weeks and hundreds of years. However, not every monster when killed goes to Tartarus. When killed, they usually turn to golden dust, yellow vapor or crumble to ashes, although some simply stay as corpses. Like the gods, monsters can fade from existence if they lose their will to live, and if people don’t believe in them, they will fade from existence. and it is also suggested that it’s not only if people don’t believe them but also if they don’t believing in themselves. The same can happen to monsters if not enough people remember them, but there are some ways to reverse this somehow.

Position

Monsters often serve as minions of evil and cause trouble for Olympus. Normally, since they can’t hurt the gods directly, they go after their demigod children instead. However, some monsters, such as some Cerberus, Pegasus, and the Furies serve Olympus. There are other monsters like the cyclopes, dragons, harpies, hellhounds that work for Olympus or run wild on their own and are not actively pursuing demigods unless they run into them. When some monsters are killed, they leave a trophy behind called a Spoil of War in the form of parts of its body, its clothing, or some kind of armament.

While most monsters were considered weak and easily killable by full-blooded deities, there were exceptions to this rule.

Monsters such Typhon and the Gigantes were monsters having been created by deities with the sole purpose of destroying other deities making them unusually powerful and feared even by the divine.

The serpent Python was also shown to be extremely powerful having previously fought the Olympian god Apollo in a fierce battle which, while Apollo won, had nearly ended in Python’s victory and gave the Olympian a severe case of PTSD whenever the monster’s name was brought up.

Spoil of War

Spoils of war are a part or parts of a monster’s body or an object used by a monster that does not disintegrate when killed. They can also be a belonging of some importance that is claimed from a defeated enemy.

Description

Many spoils of war are seen in the Big House Attic. A spoil of war can also be the result of defeated demigods, such as armor or weapons. Some spoils of war are so disgusting and/or useless that the receivers do not accept them or simply don’t want them. If it’s a body part, it’s the monster eventually regrows them as Medusa had her head cut off and used in ancient times yet was still resurrected with it to get it cut off again. In some cases, a spoil of war is collected from an enemy that is defeated but not killed. This is the case with Chrysaor and Achelous, both in ancient and modern times in the latter case. While many spoils of war are kept simply as trophies, others can serve a more practical purpose for the demigod in question. For example, Medusa’s Head is used as a weapon, one can utilizes the Nemean Lion’s Pelt as body armor and make extensive use of the cornucopia from Achelous’ horn and Zethes’ sword after defeating him. On other occasions, demigods may sacrifice their spoils of war to a particular god in the hopes of receiving something from that god in return.

Beings

Daimon

Daimons are immortal spirits that are beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves. They are often said to be ‘between gods and mortals’ in terms of power. Daimons count as very, very, very minor gods.

types of Daimon species include Nymphs, Saytrs, Keres, Arai, Makhai and Cacodemomns

Daimon in Greek means “spirit,” and thus can refer to both nature spirits like nymphs and satyrs, as well as monsters.

Many daimons are often considered a type, or the origin, of fairies, especially in the case of satyrs and nymphs.

Interestingly, most of the children of Nyx and Erebus (or just Nyx) are daimons.

Sometimes the Kouretes who protected Zeus and their relatives the Korybantes in Phrygia are considered a kind of spirit or daimon.

The word “demon” comes from Daimon. Essentially, the Greek beings described as demons are a kind of daimon in the series. Thus a daimon, differently from demons in the traditional use of the word, can be good (eudaimon), evil (kakodaimon) or neutral like nature spirits in general.
